'Mirror, Mirror'

Mirror, mirror on the wall...
It was the day before a routine hair appointment to color my gray roots
when I glanced in the mirror and saw something I had never seen before. It looked like someone had dumped glitter all over my head!

It was a couple weeks passed the normal time I usually had my hair dyed to cover the monthly growth, so the silver was long enough to catch the light...it actually sparkled!

In nineteen-ninety-four my family and I moved to China, within three years I had gone prematurely gray. I was in my twenties when I had to start coloring my hair. I have been dying my hair every month since without giving it a second thought, never once have I questioned it...

Covering your gray hair is what we do, especially if your a woman,
my time just came sooner then others and that is as deep in thought about it as I went. Which is strange for me because I'm not the status quo kinda gal.
The stigma that comes with the gray hair is quite powerful.

Staring in that mirror, twenty years and over two-hundred bottles of dye later,
I saw a glimpse of the real me for the first time...
and I love it!

  1. I have been coloring my hair since my early 20's too. I have recently wondered if I would like platinum framing my face or not.

    1. It just hit me out of the blue, I love the silver color that it is but I can't really know what I will look like till I'm a good four to six months down the road. The key (I've been told) is a good style and keeping it shiny.

    1. I will post a monthly progress picture on Instagram but I'm not under any delusions...I know it will be a good eighteen to twenty-four months because I'm keeping the length and during that time it can get pretty emotional. It's strange though, when I see it sparkle under the light I just love it.

  5. Hi! Your IG post popped up on my search feed and I big as well, so I wanted to check out what you had to say.

I'm a friend of Patti R and Stephanie W and I just love this post. When my mom, Kathy Garfield, had breast cancer and her hair fell out she wished it would come back a beautiful white. Needless to say, we blondes get an ashy gray, but oh well. lol

If you don't mind if love to follow your IG. I wanted to comment here first so you wouldn't think I'm a creeper. ;-)

  6. I love this!!!! I've started on several occasions to grow mine out, mainly because I love the sparkle/glitter look too. My kids are SO against it, and Dave isn't really into it either. I'm not sure I'm actually heady either, but eventually I will do it. I'm so excited to see how yours goes. It will probably inspire me to go ahead and do mine. I'd keep my length too, though I've recently had mine cut into an A-line bob. Longish, but shorter than when I last saw you. I love the style on me though. Hang in there with it. You'll hit those emotional moments, but hang in, and I think you're gonna love it!!! Can't wait to see how it's going along! Lots of resources online for this too. I can email you some links if you want. (I've done a LOT of searching around about this because I SO want to do it but I just can't quite get my head around it yet.) xoxo

    1. I really feel it will look good on me, I may have to change a few things up with my makeup, maybe use a wee bit more color then I already do. The chemicals have always effected my curls as well, their going to be so much nicer now. I can already see a difference.
